Pondering Freedom on Alcatraz: Ai Weiwei at Large

You notice immediately how appropriate this space is for Ai Weiwei’s art and message: the broken windows, the faded colors and peeling walls, and the vestiges of the prison contrast with his work. The imagery symbolizing flight, from the dragon kite to other works of art, is powerful within this confined space.

As a whole, The Garden of Earthly Delights is cohesive: the chaos, ultimately, makes sense. The first time I looked at it, in my art history class in high school, I was perplexed—even uneasy. Since then, this painting has become a metaphor for how I put things together, as a memoirist and thinker.
